What is it?
Boxing is a sport that has been around for centuries and throughout our history. It features two people who come head-to-head with their own plan and methodology to win the fight. At Odyssey health clubs we offer 1:1 training in the form of exercise with boxing principles. Whether you are looking to one day getting in the ring and embrace the sport in 1:1 combat or you’re just looking to find a new way of exercising in the form of boxing training.
What to expect?
Gone are the days of old-fashioned training where fighters would stand in place and lay into a heavy bag and run for many hours to prepare for fights. We as coaches have found new ways to modernise the sport and training techniques. Introduced around the 1970s we use some of the following methods to teach boxing fundamentals and principles;
- 1:1 Padwork – drilling offensive and defensive manoeuvres
- Strength and conditioning – Priming your body’s movement qualities to supplement boxing training including weight training, bodyweight and core exercises.
- Agility & Balance – Through particular movement skills & drills we will look at improving a combination or balance, coordination, speed, reflexes, strength and endurance.
- Periodised training – You will get a training plan in place that will take you through the different tiers of training to get you to whatever your end goal may be.
And what are the benefits of these?
- Weight loss
- Strength & Tone
- Stress relief
- Cardiovascular endurance
- Better Focus
What do you need?
The great thing about training boxing is you do not need the same amount of equipment you would need for something like weight training. You can start out with just your own bodyweight and start shadow boxing, or you can invest in some gloves to start putting some force into your punches onto a bag.
You do not need any experience either – I started out without any former experience and used boxing as a way of managing stress and adhering to weight loss. Over time I progressed my skills enough that this became a primary hobby of mine and would like to share this with you and get the same level of results as me.
