A recent study on the impact of exercise on inflammation related cancers, showed the importance of regular exercise.
As humans age, there is an increase in systemic inflammation, which is associated with a higher risk inflammation-related cancers and higher cancer mortality.
Regular exercise is associated with lower systemic inflammation, a lower risk of inflammation-related cancer incidence and lower cancer related mortality.
The study highlighted that aerobic exercise training helps maintain a younger, more functional immune system as we age by;
- Lowering pro-inflammatory mediators
- Increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines
- Expanding immune reservoirs
It showed that sufficient physical activity was associated with a 21% lower incidence of inflammation-related cancers, and a 34% lower all cancer mortality.
Whilst these are associations, they highlight the importance in older adults of exercise as a part of the daily routine. Physical activity is a powerful upstream modifier of inflammation and immune aging – two central drivers of cancer risk and mortality and belongs inside comprehensive prevention and treatment strategies alongside: nutrition, sleep, metabolic health, medical therapies, and oncology care.
