When Gill Marsh and her husband decided to join Odyssey Health Club after Covid, it wasn’t just about upgrading from a cold, damp home gym. Gill had been a loyal spa customer for nearly 30 years, so she already felt at home here, but this time, she had a much bigger goal in mind.
A Trip of a Lifetime… and One Big Obstacle
Gill and her husband had booked the trip of a lifetime to Australia, including snorkelling over shipwrecks and at the Great Barrier Reef. There was just one problem:
Gill couldn’t swim.
While her husband is an advanced diving instructor, Gill was terrified of putting her face in the water, not ideal when snorkelling in open sea was on the itinerary! Determined not to miss out, she signed up for five swimming lessons with Kevin, despite having very little confidence that it would work.
Her goal was simple:
“All I wanted to do was be able to snorkel and not drown.”
Starting from Scratch
The very first challenge? Putting her face in the water long enough to count her toes from right to left, and back again.
The first attempt lasted a nano second.
But Gill didn’t give up.
After eight weeks of practising independently in the corner of the pool, she was ready for lesson two. Over the next six months, she progressed from barely managing a single length to completing 12 lengths continuously, with her mask and snorkel on.
Her final lesson took place just before Christmas, with departure set for 6th January. She packed her own mask “just in case” and boarded the plane still feeling understandably nervous. After all, she had only ever practised in a pool.
“Face Straight in the Water”
Fast forward to Australia…
Gill stepped off the boat, put her face straight in the water… and did it.
She snorkelled over wrecks. She snorkelled on the Great Barrier Reef. She felt completely comfortable and enjoyed every minute.
“I could barely believe I had managed it. I was so proud of myself… and my husband was very proud too.”
Her husband was able to head off scuba diving, confident that Gill was happy and safe snorkelling independently, something that would have been unimaginable just months earlier.
The Power of Confidence and Belief
Gill is clear that while technique mattered, the real transformation was in her mindset:
“Most of what Kevin worked on was confidence and belief.”
Having since met Kevin in the spa, she added:
“Kevin never stopped believing in me so I couldn’t either.”
She also wanted to recognise the incredible support around her. Her PTs, her beauty therapist and Spa Director Tiff were all rooting for her throughout the journey. In fact, the very first question she was asked when she walked back into the club on Sunday was, “Did you do it?”. Her reply, proudly borrowed from Kevin… “Smashed it!”
She also wanted to thank the wider Odyssey community, members who gave her space to practise in the slower section of the pool and offered encouragement along the way.
What This Really Shows
Gill’s story isn’t just about learning to swim.
It’s about:
-
Facing a lifelong fear
-
Setting a meaningful goal
-
Committing to consistent practice
-
Trusting the process
-
And achieving something that once felt impossible
At Odyssey Health Club, we’re incredibly proud to provide not just facilities, but the coaching, support and community that help make moments like this possible.
From counting toes in the shallow end to snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef… that’s what progress looks like.
