Open to all Odyssey Health Club & Spa members, we were delighted to announce our first ever tennis tournament, and what a success it was!
This was an opportunity to not only put our members tennis match skills to the test, but also to join us for a fantastic social event, culminating in a final’s day on Sunday 17th July 2022 where we handed out some amazing prizes to all finalists – beautiful glass trophies, and some amazing Fila branded goodies – with onlookers enjoying some delicious food and refreshing beverages in the brilliant sunshine.
The day started with an absolute belter of a Men’s singles final between two titans of the game, Dan Hatt and Henry Thomas. It was a hard-fought battle with the victor, Henry, edging it in the match tie-break.
Next up was the Ladies’ singles finals; another formidable line up with Adrienne Swan vs. Desi Parker, a matchup we were all looking forward to. Both ladies played some outstanding tennis, with Adrienne taking the crown for 2022 in a match that looked closer than it scored.
After a brief break, we were straight back to the serving up the action with the Men’s and Ladies doubles finals. Grunts and groans were heard left, right and centre, and that was just from the crowd trying to keep up with the superb gladiator-like match play they were being treated to.
In the Mens match we had Neil Ryan and Sri Kamal up against Ollie Hind and Neil O’Callahan with the latter taking the title after a gruelling 90mins of back and forth, and an exciting championship match tie-break.
In the Ladies match we had Alex McDonald and Dorothy Tulloch vs. Debbie Lomas and Maggie Allan, with the former taking the title. Both pairs had worked hard to make it to the finals and didn’t disappoint with an enjoyable display of tennis for all.
Saving some of the best tennis till last, we welcomed the Mixed doubles finals, seeing a return of Dan Hatt and his partner, Sally White, stepping on to centre court with a menacing look in his eye and a point to prove. Steve Allan and Abigail Rymer went in for the kill in the opening shots of the game, playing some high-class shots, trying to take advantage of the perhaps slightly fatigued Dan, however both Dan and Sally rose to the occasion, the adrenaline coursing through their veins, winning the match and taking the title for 2022.
After a brief moment to catch their breaths, we moved on to the awards ceremony where the amazing Fila branded giftsets were presented, alongside the elegant glass trophies for all our well-deserving finalists, and we were treated to a few closing words from master coach and tournament organiser, Dan Clegg.
A special mention to Jim Tulloch for his amazing photography, capturing the memories of the day for us all to re-live.
Thank you all for your support – we look forward to next year’s tournament!
